asphalt shingles
noun a type of weather proofing made of asphalt and adhesive, applied to a structure's roof.

battens
noun a long, flat strip of squared wood or metal used to hold shingles in place. [1]
bitumen
noun rolled roofing made of asphalt and the seams are fused together. [5]
chimney
noun a noncombustible structure, usually made of brick or stone, that rises above the roofline to exhaust smoke and fumes. [4]
chimney cap
noun a metal or stone top placed above the chimney flue to keep out rain and snow. [4]
clay tile
noun a type of weather proofing made of hardened clay, applied to a structure's roof.

corrugated
noun shaped into alternating grooves and ridges. Often found in corrugated plastic and corrugated metal roofing profiles.
drip edge
noun metal flashing that's placed along the edges of the roof to divert rain away from the house and into the gutter. [4]
downspout
noun vertical channel attached to a wall to carry rain down the side of a structure. [4]
facia
noun any relatively broad, flat, horizontal surface, as the outer edge of a roof. [3]

eave
noun the lower edge of the roof that extends out beyond the exterior walls. [4]
EPDM
noun (ethylene propylene diene monomer) rolled rubber roofing and is made of a combination of recycled rubber, sawdust, and slate dust. [5]
flue
noun lines the interior of a chimney, safely carries smoke and fumes from fireplaces, furnaces and other fuel-burning appliances. [4]
gables
noun the portion of the exterior wall of a building enclosed by or masking the end of a pitched roof. [3]
gable end vent
noun located high on a gable-end wall, this vent admits fresh air into the attic to help keep the attic cool. [4]
gable end wall
noun the entire wall below a gable roof, including the gable and the wall below it.
gutter
noun channel attached to the fascia to carry away rain. [4] See a list of gutters

hip
noun the point at which two or more roof pitches meet at the top of the slope, not including the horizontal top edge (see ridge).
hip roof
noun a roof design that excludes gables or rakes. A majority of the eaves will remain parallel around the parameter of the roof.
metal shingle
noun a type of weather proofing made of metal shingles, applied to a structure's roof.

modified bitumen
noun asphalt membrane roofing that has additives to improve the performance of the product. [6]
outlook overhang
noun additional support where beams are spanned between rafters perpendicular to rafters along the rake of a gable. [2]
plastic roofing
noun sheets of plastic in various shapes such as corrugated or ribbed used as a roofing surface.

pvc roofing
noun (polyvinyl chloride) single ply rolled roofing made of thick, flexible UV-resistant thermoplastic material containing polyester or fiberglass, resins, pigments, plasticizers and other chemicals. [7]

rake
noun a piece of exterior trim that runs at an angle from the peak of a gable-end wall down to the eaves [4]
rafters
noun any of a series of timbers or the like, usually having a pronounced slope, for supporting the sheathing and covering of a roof. [3]
ridge
noun the point at which two or more roof pitches meet at the horizontal top of the slope.
rolled roofing
noun a flat sheet, typically 6-20 feet wide meant for low pitch roofs. Comes in rubber, EPDM, TPO or Bitumen. [5]
roofing underlayment
noun felt, or another kind of underlayment, is laid below shingles to create a waterproof barrier. It is now required by building regulations, but it may not be present on older buildings. [2]
rubber roofing
noun can be referred to as EPDM. Otherwise roofing made with rubber.

sheathing
noun boarding, often OSB, particleboard or plywood, laid on top of the rafters. Required by local codes. It adds rigidity to the roof frame and provides a nailing surface for fasteners. [2]
sheet metal
noun a type of weather proofing made of metal sheets bent into a structural profile and applied to a structure's roof.

shingles
noun a thin piece of wood, slate, metal, asbestos, or the like, usually oblong, laid in overlapping rows to cover the roofs and walls of buildings. [3]
slate shingles
noun a type of weather proofing made of shingles of natural slate and applied to a structure's roof.

soffit
noun the underside of the eaves that projects over the exterior wall, often fitted with a vent. [4]
torch down roofing
adjective rolled down roofing applied with the heat of a torch. Most often the roof is a bitumen product.
TPO
noun rolled roofing made of a combination of polypropylene and ethylene-propylene rubber. Affordable and varies in quality. [5]
valley
noun the point at which two or more roof pitches meet at the bottom of the slope. Valleys should have metal flashing to direct water off of the surface.
vent pipe
noun a plastic or cast-iron pipe that's connected to the home's plumbing system. It pokes through the roof and admits fresh air into the plumbing system, which helps sinks, tubs and toilets to drain quickly and efficiently. [4]
